If you’re staying in White River as a base to explore the Panorama Route and want an active outdoor adventure beyond game drives and waterfalls, Long Tom Scootours on the Panorama Route is a great option for a memorable day trip.

What is Long Tom Scootours?

Long Tom Scootours is a downhill scooter experience set in the mountainous terrain along the Long Tom Pass — a scenic stretch of road between Sabie and Lydenburg that forms part of the Panorama Route.

The activity starts with a short open-vehicle transfer up to about 1 765 m above sea level, where you receive a safety briefing and helmets. From there you ride a specially designed non-motorised Monster Mountain scooter downhill for approximately 5 km, descending through grasslands, patches of indigenous forest and pine plantations. The ride is guided and family-friendly, and because the scooters are powered entirely by gravity rather than motors, it’s a quiet and eco-friendly way to enjoy Mpumalanga’s natural scenery.

Who Can Do It?

  • If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a Scootour — scooters are easy to balance and control.

  • Children aged 4–9 can ride as passengers with an adult, and those 10 years and older can ride solo, weather and conditions permitting.

  • The experience is suitable for families, couples and groups, making it a relaxed but exciting outdoor activity.

What to Expect

  • Guided ride: Trips are led by experienced staff who know the route and terrain.

  • Natural scenery: The route takes you through grasslands, forests and plantations, with wide views over the highlands around Long Tom Pass.

  • Eco-friendly: Because the scooters are non-motorised and gravity-powered, the adventure has a low environmental impact.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes.

  • Bring a light jacket — the highlands can be cool in the morning.

  • Book in advance, especially on weekends, as departures sometimes require a minimum number of participants.

Distance and Driving

Long Tom Scootours is located near Sabie, which makes it a feasible day trip from White River — about 1 hr 15 min drive each way depending on traffic. This means you can combine the activity with other highlights of the Panorama Route and still be back at ilanda Guest House by evening.
