Is Kruger National Park Malaria-Free?

No, Kruger National Park is not Malaria free, but relatively low risk. SANParks recommends travellers take prophylaxis when visiting the park.

When we were living overseas and visiting Kruger, we used to take Malaria tablets if staying in the park for a long time. Now that we live in White River and visit Kruger Park much more often, we don't! In reality, we estimate most South African travellers don't take prophylaxis. Also note, Malaria prophylaxis is not a 100% guarantee you won't contract Malaria.

We recommend:

  • Consult your doctor on the decision whether to take Malaria prophylaxis.

  • Whatever your decision, take measures to reduce mosquito bites.

  • Should you develop flu like symptoms once back home, make sure to consult your doctor and inform him you were in a low risk Malaria area.
