Three Rondavels Viewpoint – The Most Famous View in the Blyde River Canyon

The Three Rondavels viewpoint is one of the most photographed locations along the Panorama Route and a highlight of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.

From this elevated lookout, visitors enjoy sweeping views over the canyon, the winding Blyde River far below, and the iconic rock formations that resemble traditional African rondavel huts.

These rounded sandstone peaks rise dramatically from the canyon walls, creating an instantly recognisable landscape and unique to Mpumalanga.

Why the Three Rondavels Are So Special

The formation consists of three main rock towers — traditionally named Magaboleng, Mogoladikwe, and Maskelegwane — shaped by erosion over millions of years. Their distinctive dome-like appearance gave rise to the name “Three Rondavels.”

From the viewpoint, visitors can also see:

  • The full scale of the Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons in the world

  • The Blyde Dam in the distance

  • Sheer cliffs, layered rock faces and deep valleys

On clear days, visibility is exceptional, making this one of the best panoramic viewpoints in South Africa.

Visiting the Viewpoint

The site is easily accessible by car, with parking close to the viewpoints and a short, level walk to the viewing area.

Railings and platforms are present at the main "official" viewpoints. Trails lead along the edge between the viewpoints among the rocks and make for a worthwhile short walk to see the different perspectives into the canyon.

Information boards have been placed explaining the geology, history and biodiversity, unfortunately some are faded and difficult to read.

Because of its exposed position, the viewpoint can be windy and cooler than the Lowveld below — a light jacket is often useful, even in summer.

Depending on your plan and schedule, this viewpoint is the perfect place for a packed picnic. Walk a little away from the crowds, find a nice rock to sit on and soak in the view while you refuel for the rest of the trip.

This viewpoint is very popular and can get crowded with several touring buses present at the same time. If you can, try to visit early or late in the day before the crowds show up.

What is the best season to visit Three Rondavels viewpoint?

We don't think there is "a" best season to visit the Three Rondavels Viewpoint. Nonethelss the South African summer is the rainy season in Mpumalanga, hence you run the risk of being rained out. But cloudy African skies are beautiful and arguably make for better photos with billowing cumulonimbus clouds in the afternoon.

In the Mpumalanga winter, you are mostly guaranteed clear skies and no rain, meaning good views into Blyde Canyon. The sky may be slightly hazy due to suspended particles from winter fires and lack of rain.

What is the best time to visit Three Rondavels Viewpoint?

This viewpoint is very popular and can get crowded with several touring buses present at the same time. If you can, try to visit early or late in the day before the crowds show up. Sunset at the viewpoint is magical though the viewpoint is officially closed well before sunset, especially in summer when the days a longer.

Is it worthwhile visiting Three Rondavels viewpoint when it is cloudy?

This is a difficult question to answer and really depends on your travel schedule, whether you'll ever be coming to the region again and you alternatives to skipping the viewpoint

The truth is that if the sky is occluded with a drizzling stratus layer of clouds, meaning low-level, gray, and featureless clouds that create a "blanket" or "sheet" across the sky, you may not see much of the Canyon.

But if it is windy, you'll most still likely see glimpses of the canyon as the clouds ebb and flow. If you are patient, you might even be rewarded with a full view as the clouds open up for you, which is usually a magical experience.

Our favourite experiences at the 3 Rondavels Viewpoint definitely included some kind of "weather" conditions. Bonus is that fewer people will be present there.

In the worst-case scenario you'll make a memory of coming to see Blyde River Canyon and being blanked out!

3 Rondavels Coffee Shop: Refreshments at the Viewpoint

A relatively new offering for tourists visiting to the viewpoint is the 3 Rondavels Coffee Shop.

The coffee shop is located in the middle of the parking among the curio stalls, so view are limited, but it is a convenient place for an emergency quick bite to eat or refreshment.

Grab a drink and enjoy it from the viewpoints rather than sitting at a table.

Other restaurant and café options we recommend near Three Rondavel Viewpoint are the Chubby Pig in direction of Graskop and the Restaurant at the Blyde River Forever Resort in direction of the Strydom Tunnel.

Takeaways are also available at Bourke’s Luck Potholes but not a great place to sit and enjoy a meal either.

Unfortunately, Potluck Boskombuis on the banks of the Treuer has closed a while ago already.
