Mariepskop – Blyde River Canyon’s Highest Mountain

Mariepskop is the highest peak in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, rising to approximately 1 945 metres above sea level. Located on the northern Drakensberg escarpment, Mariepskop forms part of the greater Blyde River Canyon region and offers some of the most expansive and dramatic views in the province.

Unlike more accessible Panorama Route viewpoints, Mariepskop is wild, remote and less developed — appealing to visitors who enjoy rugged landscapes and quiet mountain environments.

What Makes Mariepskop Special

Mariepskop’s elevation places it above the surrounding Lowveld, creating a cooler climate and an entirely different ecosystem. The mountain supports mist belt forest, grassland and rare plant species that are not found lower down.

On clear days, views from Mariepskop extend across:

  • The Blyde River Canyon

  • The Lowveld plains

  • Hoedspruit and surrounding areas

  • In exceptional conditions, parts of Kruger National Park in the distance

Because of its height and isolation, weather can change quickly, with mist and wind common near the summit.

Access and Conditions

Access to Mariepskop is via a steep gravel road that is often rough and eroded. A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially after rain. In some seasons, access may be difficult due to road conditions.

There are no formal visitor facilities at the summit. There are limited facilities at the forestry station below the summit with the office and basic self-catering accommodation.

Hiking

While Mariepskop is not a mainstream hiking destination, there are hiking trails. Only experienced hikers and researchers should be hiking here without a guide, as the trails can be poorly marked and overgrown. Taking a guide is recommended.

A hiking trail from the Loweld to the top of Mariepskop starts in Kampersrus.

Distance from White River

Mariepskop is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours’ drive from White River, depending on route and road conditions. It is best visited as part of a full-day outing, often combined with other Blyde River Canyon viewpoints at lower altitude, especially the Swadini Viewpoints.
