Legogote is an iconic Lowveld mountain and landmark which can be seen and recognised from far away.  The summit stands at about 1 194 metres above sea level. Hiking Legogote makes for an adventurous day trip from White River.

What does Legogote mean?

Legogote, also spelt Legogoto or Lugogodo, means "the large one' or 'eternal one' in Swazi

Legogote is also called Lion’s Head due to the distinctive sphinx like shape of the mountains, with Legogote proper as it’s head, from certain perspectives.

Legogote offers a rare opportunity to see bushman paintings. The location of the paintings are not signposted, so a little searching is required. This site with the paintings is also used by the local community during initiations.

From the top of Legogote looking east you can see far into the Kruger towards the Lebombo Mountains. Looking north you can see the large residential developments of all the way to Number and Hazyview. On weekends, you’ll probably hear music and merrymaking from the location below.

Climbing Legogote

There used to be a clear hiking trail to the top of Legogote starting at the Petra College. The trail was clearly marked with yellow hiking paint.

As of 2025, it seems like access to Petra College to hike is now closed, since the Petra College is not operating anymore.

Luckily, Legogote can be hiked from any side of the mountain.

As far as we know no local tour operators offers guided climbs to Legogote, so this is for independent travellers and hikers only. Check peakery.com for latest ascents and recommended routes.

Access is from the R538 between White River and Hazyview or the Spionkop road just off the Plaston Road (the road connecting KMIA Airport to White River).

The climb is a pleasant walk, uphill, of course! Well trodden paths by local, cattle and even motorbikes can be used to approach and walk around the mountain.

If going to the summit, there is a very short section requiring upper body strength to haul yourself up, then after that section some light scrambling of the granite dome itself. Be careful is climbing in the rain, though the granite is well textured.

View from the summit of Legogote

The summit of Legogote offers a 360 degrees panoramic view over the Kruger National Park, Forestry, small holdings and nearby locations like Jerusalem, Chweni and Mganduzweni.

On weekends, you'll most likely hear the bustling sounds of the activity nearby whether a soccer match or general merrymaking.

Legogote is one of the rare places with widely known Bushman (San) paintings. In season the site is used for initiation ceremonies.

Climbing Legogote is a fun half-day activity when based in White River. This is clearly an off the beaten path hike but for the adventurous travellers makes a memorable short hike. Combine this with another half-day activity like visiting the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, and you’ll have a full day of activities from White River.

Legogote in the South Africa imagination

Legogote has captured the imagination of travellers and residents alike.  Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, South Africa’s foremost landscape painter, painted the mountain in his piece,

“Legogote, Oos Transvaal”, which sold for more than 2 million rand at the Strauss & Co auction house.

Many products and companies have been named after the mountain, and its iconic silhouette makes for an amazing logo.

A notable example are the Legogote Villagers Club, the local White River running club based at the Rugby Club between the Oaks Road and Danie Joubert Street.

Where is Legogote located

Legogote is just outside White River between the

On one side of Legogote you’ll find the Peebles Valley which hosts many well known establishments and NGOs including Africa School of Missions, Milites Dei Academy, Petra Institute, the Seed of Hope and Hands at Work. Hotels like Umsisi House, the Citadel of Peace,

On the other side communities like Jerusalem, Mganduzweni, Chweni and further afield Kabokweni can be found.

The base of Legogote is covered in woodland and further afield grasslands known as Legogote Sourveld.

Being prepared before climbing Legogote

  • Before climbing Legogote make sure you have a clear itinerary in mind.

  • Be mindful that this is still a mountain and people have died climbing the mounting. Stay on the hiking trail when climbing the rocky summit and climb well within your ability.

How much does it cost to climb Legogote

Climbing Legogote is not commercialised at all and therefore free to do. If you are climbing from the Mganduzweni side, you can ask to park your car inside or outside somebody’s yard and a small payment on return would be appreciated - R50 should do.

When travelling the Lowveld and Panorama route, its fun to play the "can you spot Legogote from here game". Whenever we do spot Legogote we snap a picture, here are a few photos.
