Mac Mac Falls

Mac Mac Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in the area at 65 meters and the second highest in Mpumalanga (after Lisbon Falls). Conveniently located right next to the R532, it makes for an easy stop while touring the Panorama Route.

The viewing platform is at the edge of the precipice, and a high fence is in place to safeguard viewers.

The gorge wall on the opposite side is covered with lush vegetation watered by the waterfall's spray. If you have binoculars, you might spot flowering Streptocarpus. Other special plants here include the Mac-Mac African hyacinth (Ledebouria rupestris).

This is also a good place to spot the Northern Crag Lizard.

You'll also find well-stocked curio stalls. Opening times are from 08:00 to 17:00, and the site parking is closed outside these hours.

Mac Mac Falls is on the Fanie Botha Trail. As such, you can park at the Mac Mac Falls parking area and walk all the way to Mac Mac Pools by following the Fanie Botha Trail. The trail is not well marked, but it starts on the northeast side of the parking lot, following the Mac Mac River gorge downstream.

The waterfall and the indigenous forest in the river gorge have been a Provincial Heritage Site since February 1983. The gorge itself is mostly inaccessible except for hardy hikers of the Fanie Botha Trail, who get a glimpse of the gorge while crossing the suspension bridge on their way between Graskop Hut and Mac Mac Pools.

Mac Mac Pools is a pleasant place to stop for a picnic. Braai (barbecue) facilities and toilets are available. Another entrance fee must be paid here.

Mac Mac Pools also has a very pleasant walking loop called the Secretary Bird Trail, passing through grassland, crags, and forest patches.
