Lone Creek Falls

Lone Creek is a spectacular 68-meter waterfall and a national monument. There is a short 60-meter trail through indigenous forest before reaching the waterfall. The other side is a 250-meter trail. The paths overlooking the waterfall are now closed due to erosion and danger caused by the waterfall spray.

The road between Sabie and the waterfall is terribly potholed, but a slow drive will allow all vehicles to access Lone Creek Falls.

The parking area has the river flowing through it. The lush lawns have braai/BBQ, picnic facilities, and toilets shaded by towering trees.

This waterfall is accessible for wheelchair users with some assistance. Also, note that this waterfall can be busy during peak seasons.

The vegetation around the waterfall is lush due to the mist and spray from the falling water. During heavy rainfall, these falls are spectacular, but get ready to be soaked!

The rock face is also worth admiring, with intricate patterns created by the ancient geology.

Lone Creek Falls is a tributary of the Sabie River, with its source at the base of Mount Anderson, meandering through Maritzbos. Maritzbos is a section of the Fanie Botha Trail and undoubtedly its prettiest section, with many hidden waterfalls for the intrepid hiker.

Unfortunately, fencing has been added around the waterfall pool, so wading in the water is no longer possible.

Lone Creek Falls is also the type locality of three minerals discovered here: the aptly named Lonecreekite, Sabieite, and Clairite—all three containing iron, hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen.

The area also has old mining tunnels and cave systems. There are said to be kilometers of tunnels extending all the way to Pilgrim's Rest. Kestell Adventures organizes caving activities in the area. You can find their office in Sabie, next to the Fig Tree Restaurant.
